AGS is a group within the Australian Government Attorney-General’s Department providing legal services to government, a role that we have fulfilled since Federation and our sole reason for existing.
We assist the Attorney-General in the role of First Law Officer and we advise the Executive Government and all Commonwealth agencies.
Our long experience in working with government agencies means we understand the Government's legislative and regulatory frameworks, policy objectives and key programs.
We work with client agencies to deliver outcomes and minimise legal risk by providing high-quality advice and representation and timely, reliable service. We have the expertise, the corporate memory and the resources to do this in a way no other legal practice can.
As a legal practice owned by the Commonwealth, AGS is dedicated to the interests of our clients individually and the interests of government as a whole. We work in collaboration with your in-house legal teams, providing value-for-money legal services supporting a 'whole-of-government' perspective.
AGS is one of Australia's largest national legal services providers, with offices in every capital city and approximately 320 lawyers who cover some 40 different areas of law related to government.
As a practice, AGS is structured into 3 groups which work together on complex matters that require expertise across several areas of law.
We, like our clients, are publicly accountable and aim to serve the public good.

Providing excellent client service is extremely important to AGS.
In our most recent client survey, almost 1,000 respondents from approximately 100 agencies rated AGS very highly in 5 key areas – legal expertise, quality of relationship, ease of doing business, understanding their business and responsiveness.
Our Client Service Managers are the main contact for clients about any matter or aspect of our service delivery. Their role is to ensure that your needs are met efficiently and effectively and that your experience with AGS is the best it can be.
