Is AGS part of the Australian
Public Service?
No. Up until 1999 AGS was part of
the Australian Public Service in the Attorney-General’s
Department. On 1 September 1999, AGS was established as
a separate statutory authority under the Judiciary
Act 1903, and prescribed as a government business enterprise.
As such, AGS is no longer part of the Australian Public
Service nor is it covered by the Public Service Act 1999.
Who can use AGS legal services?
AGS operates in three segments of
the overall government legal services market:
- all Australian Government departments,
agencies and statutory authorities
- all state and territory government
departments, agencies and statutory offices
- international clients when Australian
Government interest is involved.
Do you offer work experience
placements?
As part of our contribution to the
wider community, we provide work experience placements for
students in secondary schools, colleges and universities
to give them a general insight into working in a national
legal practice. Placements are available for legal work
areas and other specialist areas such as human resources
and information technology.
Are there inter-office secondment
opportunities?
Our employees are able to move between
our various offices and corporate function groups to gain
a variety of experience on different matters and projects
through secondment development opportunities.
Are there client secondment
opportunities?
AGS provides many client secondment
opportunities including in-house counsel roles located within
clients’ offices, on short or long term arrangements.
