CUSTOMS AND TRADE

With strengths in: border protection, cargo and trade, customs law and enforcement, excise and quarantine.

AGS has a unique advantage in providing customs and other trade-related legal advice in the Australian Government context, as we have been the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service's principal legal adviser since Federation.

We have a strong network of lawyers across AGS who regularly practise in this area. Their expertise covers the range of legal issues that arise in relation to border protection and maritime surveillance as well as Customs and Border Protection's border-related revenue management. This includes tariff concessions and duty drawback to industry, and collection of customs duties. We have also built up strong expertise in litigation involving prosecutions and judicial review of decisions relating to trade measures (that is, anti-dumping and countervailing obligations), having regularly acted in this area over a long period of time.

In addition, we have expertise in legal issues arising under other legislation administered by Customs and Border Protection and have long experience in providing advice to Austrade.
