MIGRATION

With strengths in: citizenship, refugee and humanitarian issues, visas and compliance.

Historically, Australia is a migrant country. Our corporate knowledge in the development and application of Australian Government law and policy generally and migration law in particular can be of significant benefit to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, the Migration Review Tribunal and the Refugee Review Tribunal.

Over the years, we have gained an impressive depth of experience in both migration law and international law. Ongoing work on a wide range of migration issues means we fully understand the sensitivities of these areas of government activity.

We are familiar with the role and operations of the various migration-related tribunals and of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. Our legal advice and assistance have been provided in relation to a wide range of issues arising under immigration law, including citizenship, refugee and humanitarian issues, migration and temporary entry, settlement of migrants and humanitarian entrants, immigration compliance and detention and border immigration controls.

Our understanding of the subject and our presence in all capital cities allow us to provide the department and tribunals with coordinated and superior legal advice on a nationally consistent basis.

See Litigation notes No. 11 ‘The constitutional meaning of alien’ 22 October 2004, Litigation notes No. 13 ‘Constitutional validity of mandatory immigration detention provisions’ 29 November 2005, Express law ‘Procedural fairness, secret information, disavowals of reliance by decision-makers and public interest immunity’ 14 December 2005.
