FOI notices of decision – section 26 FOI Act

Who should attend

This course is for employees who have attended our 'Introduction to FOI' course.

Course outline

This course is designed to assist all of those who have struggled with, and despaired over, statements of reasons. In this course, we will consider:

  • the policy behind, and purpose of, the requirement to give reasons in section 26 of the Freedom of Information Act 1982
  • how statements of reasons are to be prepared so that they satisfy section 26(1)(a)
  • the framing of statements of reasons so as not to disclose exempt material (section 26(2)).

We will work through these and other issues by composing statements of reasons in respect of a factual case study. A detailed paper will also be provided.

In this course participants will gain a full appreciation of section 26 requirements and the ways of meeting them.

Our presenters are AGS lawyers who have a great depth of knowledge of the government environment and who practise extensively in the areas of information access and administrative law.

This is a half-day course, either 9 am – 12.30 pm or 1.30 – 5 pm. The calendar indicates when sessions are being offered by either 'am' or 'pm'. Morning/afternoon tea will be provided.

Standard fee – $600 (inclusive of GST) per person.

No more than 20 people will be accepted on each course and courses will only be conducted if we receive sufficient nominations.
