Areas of law

Areas of law

Consistent with its role as the Australian Government’s central legal services provider, and reflecting its move to an internal charging model from 1 July 2019, AGS sits alongside the Whole of Australian Government Legal Services Panel and Commonwealth agencies can use AGS for any legal work at any time.

The panel consists of 5 broad areas of law and each area of law comprises a number of practice areas. In addition to the areas of law under the panel, AGS also provides services across a number of other specialist legal streams.

Area 1: Workplace, industrial relations and compensation

Area 2: Public law

Area 3: Corporate and commercial

Area 4: Property and environment

Area 5: Litigation specialisation

Tied work

Tied work is non-contestable work which, pursuant to the Attorney-General's Legal Services Directions, AGS and other tied providers are required to perform.

Taxation

AGS has expert knowledge and experience in taxation matters.

Competition and consumer law

AGS works with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and the Australian Energy Regulator (AER). Our regulatory team has considerable expertise in these sectors, as well as in administrative law applications.

Specialist expertise

AGS has specialist expertise in constitutional and public law, statutory interpretation and the development, implementation and administration of legislation.
