Law enforcement

Kristy is the Team Leader of our Law Enforcement team. She provides specialist litigation assistance, particularly in high-profile, complex and sensitive matters, for Australian security and law enforcement agencies. She regularly advises on issues concerning the disclosure and protection of information in civil and criminal proceedings, the conduct of Commonwealth criminal prosecutions and the use of investigative powers.

She conducts proceedings in both Federal and State courts and tribunals, and inquests and inquiries. She acted for the Commonwealth in the Inquest into the deaths arising from the Lindt Café siege, the Royal Commission into the Home Insulation Program, and as a member of the AGS team of solicitors assisting the Inquiry into certain Australian companies in the UN Oil-For-Food Programme.

Relevant experience

Kristy’s relevant experience includes:

  • acting for the Australian Federal Police in proceedings challenging search warrants in Australian Broadcasting Corporation v Kane (No 2) [2020] FCA 133 and Smethurst v Commissioner of Police (2020) 94 ALJR 502
  • acting for the Commissioner of Taxation in proceedings concerning legal professional privilege in Glencore International & Ors v Commissioner of Taxation & Ors (2019) 265 CLR 646
  • acting for the Commonwealth in the Inquest into the deaths arising from the Lindt Café Siege

Recognition

Kristy received an Attorney-General’s Department Australia Day Award in 2017 for her work on the Inquest into the deaths arising from the Lindt Café Siege.
