Senior Executive Lawyer
Joel joined AGS in 2023 as a Senior Executive Lawyer, with over 20 years of continuous experience as a litigation lawyer in large commercial law firms, the last 7 as a Partner in a national disputes practice. Joel sits across AGS Dispute Resolution Civil Claims and Tax teams. He has extensive experience in recovering routine debt and complex disputes across various areas of law acting for government, financial institutions, large business, and insolvency professionals.
Since joining AGS, Joel has acted in a variety of large disputes as well as advised on the Commonwealth’s response in various pre-insolvency and insolvency matters involving industries of significance to the Australian Government. He has also advised the active creditor program within the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations responsible for administering the Fair Entitlements Guarantee scheme. Joel also assists the Official Trustee in Bankruptcy and Inspector-General in Bankruptcy with a wide variety of personal insolvency and regulatory matters.
Joel has previously acted on both sides of the insolvency process. He has acted for both administrators/liquidators and distressed companies (as well as their directors) across a number of large, high-profile liquidations, including Octaviar (formerly MFS, a property and finance group which failed in 2008 with $2 billion in debts) and Linc Energy (underground coal gasification, acting in an environmental prosecution of the directors).
