National Leader, Commercial
Nick joined the AGS Commercial team as National Leader in October 2021. As a Senior Executive Lawyer, he provides strategic advice and leads AGS teams advising Commonwealth agencies on major commercial matters.
Previously a partner at Ashurst for 17 years (including as head of its national Corporate practice), Nick has broad-ranging corporate and commercial experience. In the private sector, he advised on some of Australia's most significant corporate transactions across a range of industry sectors, assisting major domestic and international clients such as BHP, ANZ and Shell. This included advising on the strategy, negotiation and execution of M&A, capital markets and commercial transactions as well as on governance and compliance issues.
In the public sphere, he acted for a number of Commonwealth and State agencies on major public projects including privatisations, procurements, infrastructure and regulatory reform including:
- Finance in respect of the potential commercialisation of ASIC’s registry business
- Defence on the sale of ASC Shipbuilding
- DFAT on the establishment of the Coral Sea Cable Company
- Finance on the scoping study for Defence Housing Australia
- Sydney Motorway Corporation on the WestConnex project and sale
- Victorian Department of Treasury and Finance on the sale of its stake in Snowy Hydro Company Ltd.
Nick is sought out for his judgment and creative thinking. He combines an ability to distil and navigate complex issues with a collaborative style to help clients to structure and execute processes to anticipate risks and achieve successful outcomes.
