Australian Government Solicitor (AGS) in partnership with the Australian Government Legal Service (AGLS) is offering free ethics training for Australian Government lawyers. AGS and AGLS will host 7 training sessions in Canberra, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne over June/July 2025.
About the training
The training will be a 90-minute face-to-face session and will explore the fundamentals of professional practice as a government lawyer, with a particular focus on ethical responsibilities. The session will be facilitated by a senior and experienced AGS lawyer. By the end of this session participants will have a sound appreciation for the theoretical underpinnings of professional practice in a government context, and how that theory translates into practice in everyday legal work. Topics will include:
- The sources and rationale for ethical obligations on government lawyers
- The content of the government lawyer’s key professional responsibilities
- The interplay between legal ethics, the Legal Services Directions, and model litigant obligations
- Practical tips for advising in an in-house environment.
The training is available to Australian Government employees. For questions about the training please contact the AGLS Team at agls@governmentlawyers.gov.au.
