Registrations are now open for ‘Statutory interpretation’, the first of 13 topics in the newly launched Core Legal Capabilities training program. The program will be rolled out over an 18-month period, with a new course delivered each month from 31 July, alongside repeat sessions.
This training initiative forms part of the Attorney-General’s Department’s broader commitment to enhancing the efficiency, consistency and quality of Commonwealth legal services. Through the program, AGS aims to partner with Commonwealth agencies to strengthen the professional development of their in-house legal teams.
It is intended that the program will help build awareness of core legal topics relevant to Commonwealth legal practice, particularly for in-house government lawyers who are new or relatively new to the Commonwealth environment. The program is also open to all in-house lawyers from Commonwealth agencies looking to strengthen or refresh their knowledge.
The AGS, Matthew Blunn, says of the program,
‘It is designed to provide practical guidance and share professional insights, with a particular focus on the distinct features of Commonwealth legal work and the steps government lawyers should take to effectively meet their professional obligations.’
Each topic will be delivered by senior AGS subject matter experts and will consist of a 60-minute online presentation (although some topics may be offered in a hybrid format). Sessions will be supported by a 20-to-30-minute podcast or video (in place of traditional pre-reading material). Each topic will attract CPD points.
