Senior Executive Lawyer
Matthew is the Team Leader of our Tax team with extensive experience in litigating and resolving complex disputes. He has been a solicitor with AGS for more than 20 years and was formerly a Senior Investigator with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
His experience includes advising and acting for Commonwealth regulators and agencies, including the Australian Taxation Office, Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, Australian Securities and Investments Commission, Australian Prudential Regulation Authority, and the Australian Communications and Media Authority.
He has practised in all areas of public law, with a focus on regulation and revenue. Matthew was a senior member of the team of solicitors assisting the Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry. He currently leads teams handling pre-litigation transfer pricing cases and Federal Court matters concerning anti-avoidance provisions, promoter penalty provisions and foreign resident capital gains tax provisions for the ATO. He has conducted and managed a range of other tax controversy matters, including tax appeals under Part IVC of the Taxation Administration Act 1953 in the Administrative Review Tribunal and Federal Court, administrative review matters, civil penalty matters (including under the promoter penalty regime and the Foreign Acquisitions and Takeovers Act 1975) and matters involving the operation of double taxation treaties. He regularly engages and briefs experts and advises on complex settlement deeds.
